The School of Science is one of the oldest schools in Tibet University. The school consists of two departments, Mathematics and Physics, and a Physics Experiment Center. The school currently has 60 faculty members, including 49 full-time teachers, 14 of whom have doctorates and 26 have master’s degrees, accounting for 81.6% of the full-time teachers. There are 15 professors (including researchers), 22 associate professors (including senior experimenters), 4 doctoral supervisors, and 20 master’s supervisors. The school has 3 national-level high-level talents, 1 academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, 2 members of the Ministry of Education’s Teaching Guidance Committee, and 1 academic and technical leader at the autonomous region level. Two teachers have won the “Baogang Education Fund Excellent Teacher Award”, two teachers have won the “Autonomous Region Teaching Expert” title, and one teacher has won the Autonomous Region Teaching Master.

The school currently has 2 first-level master’s degree programs (Mathematics, Physics), 2 second-level master’s degree programs (Discipline Teaching–Mathematics, Physics, Curriculum and Teaching Theory–Mathematics, Physics); there are 3 undergraduate majors (Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Physics, Applied Physics), among which Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Physics are normal majors, and Applied Physics (New Energy Direction) is a non-normal major. Mathematics and Applied Mathematics and Physics are national first-class undergraduate professional construction points, among which Physics is a characteristic major in the Tibet Autonomous Region.

The school currently has 796 full-time students, including 683 undergraduates and 113 graduate students.

Since 2012, the school has jointly trained undergraduates with Wuhan University (“1+2+1” joint training), and selects about 8 excellent students from each major every year. In addition, the school has also established a joint training mechanism for master’s and doctoral students with Wuhan University, Sichuan University, Southwest Jiaotong University, National Astronomical Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and other universities and research institutes. The school’s recommended graduate students mainly go to relevant research institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wuhan University and other well-known universities and research institutes for further study, and some of the recommended students have become doctoral students in well-known research institutes at home and abroad.

The school currently has 1 “Ministry of Education Key Laboratory” (Cosmic Ray Open Laboratory), 3 autonomous region key laboratories (Cosmic Ray Open Laboratory, Astrophysics Center, Plateau Oxygen Supply and Human Settlement Environment Laboratory), 2 Tibet Autonomous Region Higher Education Key Laboratory (Solar Ultraviolet Radiation Laboratory, Cosmic Ray Open Laboratory), 3 school-level research institutes (Cosmic Ray Research Institute, Environmental Physics Research Institute, Mathematics Education Research Institute). Combined with the actual situation in Tibet, we strive to transform the location advantages and plateau characteristics into disciplinary advantages, and have done a lot of work in their respective disciplines, and have achieved a batch of scientific research results that have a certain impact at home and abroad.

The school, based on the local area, insists on cooperating with Sichuan University, Southwest Jiaotong University, Wuhan University, Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute of Atmospheric Physics, National Astronomical Observatory, Nanjing University and other domestic research institutes as well as Norway, Japan, Italy, Germany and other foreign research institutions, and has achieved gratifying results. The annual scientific research funding has reached more than 8 million yuan in the past three years. The project “Astrophysics Research of High-altitude Multi-band Observation in Tibet” applied by the Cosmic Ray Research Institute won the first prize of Tibet Autonomous Region Science and Technology in 2014.

The school has successively won the titles of “National Advanced Collective in the Education System”, “National Civilized Unit”, “Regional Civilized Unit”, “Regional Advanced Collective for Ethnic Unity and Progress”, “Regional Advanced Grassroots Party Organization”, etc.

The graduates trained by the School of Science have high ideological quality and political theory level, strong dedication and responsibility, and have been widely praised by employers. According to incomplete statistics, about 50% of the science teachers in middle schools in the whole region are graduates of the School of Science. They are hardworking, rooted in the grassroots, and willing to dedicate. Among them, the heroic alumni Lun Bai is an outstanding representative of the vast number of excellent graduates of the School of Science.

The school will take the opportunity of the “Ministry and Region Co-construction” of Tibet University, continue to uphold the motto of Tibet University “Unity, Diligence, Seeking Truth, Innovation” and the motto of the School of Science “Rigorous Learning, Careful Cultivation”, continue to carry forward, focus on disciplinary characteristics, continuously expand and extend the research field of plateau science, effectively improve the quality of talent training, and contribute more to the economic and social development of Tibet.
